Norman's Bistro

So if Norman is the head of the Bistro than Chef Robert is the heart, and the two work really well together.

Norman himself is a staunch business man and real estate tycoon of exquisite taste.  Everything he does is methodical, organized, and well thought-out;  in fact, his Kenwood   neighbors who have watched his empire grow describe him as being "shrewd".  When you visit the Bistro you will know him by this upright posture and pristine attire.  While you are eating you will notice the ambiance of the restaurant which has Norman's name written all over it.  Maple wood floors throughout the 3,000 square foot bistro provide for seating arrangements spacious enough for private conversations.  Art from all corners of the world grace the walls.  The music playing is an eclectic mixture of yesterdays jams and today's soul, while at a volume that is romantic.  Everything is in it's place, and the overall image fulfills your expectations of an upscale bistro..

The food  is far less linear, no matter what kind of food you like there is a pleasant surprise awaiting on the menu.  With appetizers like the Asian wings sprinkled with chopped bacon, and the ocean cakes that combine shrimp, lobster, and scallops with a wasabi sauce you will know that the main course won't let you down;  and, it doesn't.  Everything from the Chicken pot pie loaded with crisp fresh vegetables to the Gumbo with a large medallion shrimp in every forkful is pleasantly filling and delicious.  While, I am a meat eater, I even enjoy his vegetarian dish featuring a sweat potato smothered with cinnamon, spices and a hint of brown sugar.  The meats have been marinated and are flavorful, the vegetables are crisp and not over cooked, and the seasonings are mild , but playful;  so,  simply put - the man can cook.

The Genius of Rosemary Fanti

You don't have a "shi - shi"  bridal fashion event in Chicago without "the blonde lady that does the sketches".  So, yes I was relieved once Rosemary Fanti agreed to come and illustrate my collection.

Rosemary's light shines very bright.  She is a talent of spell bounding proportions.  Over the years, we in the local fashion community  have been fortune to be able to marvel over her creations  at our many ritzy fashion events.  My heart quickens at the thought that she will be there to illustrate my BIG DAY on August 7th at the Loft on Lake.

I know that you will love seeing Rosemary as she illustrates the evening for us, and I believe that she is that unique idea or concept that you were looking for to spice up your wedding reception.  I for one can not wait to get my hands on those sketches Rosemary, I know your perspective will be so engaging.  And, brides I suspect your guest will be equally as excited to have her illustrate them while they have a ball on your BIG DAY.

Tuan H. Bui, with a bird's eye.

While Tuan H. Bui is a man of little spoken words, he is very articulate in the language of film.  His understanding of light, space, and perspective expands the boundaries of his art.  In the age of digital imaging it's refreshing to see a bridal photographer who is still a master of the medium of film.  Tuan avoids the pitfalls of photographers who rely so heavily on adding effects that they cease to capture the realness that is loaded in the special moments of life.

His photographs tell you everything you need to know about him.  He is careful, attentive, and methodical by nature, so he is excellent at composing a photograph.  He is warm, quirky, and unassuming, so your guest will find him adorable as opposed to irritating, and they will give him the shots he needs.  He is a people lover, so he watches people with a birds eye, and you will find that when a moment occurs he is already there as if he somehow seen it coming;  perhaps, the gift his true gift is the gift of observation.

Why The Loft on Lake?

Why the "Loft on Lake"?


In my travels I have been to some beautiful places:  the  Louvre, of Paris, the pier off the Bani river in Mopti, the Palm of Dubai.  Yet, the 65ft skylight at the Loft on Lake still catches me completely off guard.  So, when I decided to give a "sneak preview" of my collection I crossed my fingers, and said, "Cher, I just need any day that's open in August".

The space is an open canvas that juxtaposes the elements of nature - red clay bricks, oak wood timber, and the moonlit skies with urbanite living amenities - a state of the art sound and visual system, a gracious chef's kitchen equipped with stainless steel appliances and granite topped island serving stations, gorgeous contemporary lounge furniture, and a well appointed art gallery.  The space itself is a conversation piece.

A far cry from a run of the mill hotel ball room;  the Loft on Lake is something fresh and new..  The Loft on Lake is where special people go for their events.  The Loft on Lake is where we are holding the "sneak preview" of The White Collection - LUXE on August 7th.  I can't wait to meet you all there.

Meet Susan from the Left Bank in Loft on Lake on August 7th

About a year ago when I was looking for a veil with a scalloped aloncon lace finish for a Lake Geneva wedding, I began calling around town and all roads led me back to Susan at the Left Bank.  Susan is so accomplished as a bridal mainstay in Chicago.  She has been in business for over 15 years, and she is definitely at the top of her game.  Because she is the coveted stylist of many high-end brides you would think she would be stoic and stand off-ish; contrarily, ladies she is remarkably welcoming, and eager to help her colleagues and customers.

I was hesitant to call Susan, and try to book her for our "sneak preview" on August 7th at the Loft on Lake, because I know how busy she is at this time of year.  Thankfully when I approached her about our event she was as always a burst of summer breeze.  Her positive energy, and vitality is so refreshing.  If ever you get nervous, frustrated, eager, or lost on your bridal journey go to Susan at the Left Bank.  Her boutique will take you back to the time when you were playing house as a little girl, and you had no worries in the world.

Her store is located at 1155 W Webster Ave. in Lincoln Park on the North side of Chicago.  She started out as a jewelry boutique, but she's expanded to hair pendants, veils, shoes, purses, other accessories, and bridal gifts.  I particularly think her ranges in prices makes the Left Bank one of the few bridal boutiques that has something for every bride on that special day.  Susan certainly has an eye for the dramatic, as she has shoes covered in gems, veils with feathers, and custom necklaces with pearls the size of walnuts; but, what I love are the simple classic treasures and even your conservative sophisticated brides just can't do without.  I can't imagine a soon-to-bride walking into the store, and not falling in love.  So, my advice is if you are on a budget, leave your credit cards in the car, lol.

So how long is too long to stay engaged?

The short answer is over 18 months.

Now of course the long answer has to take a gazillion things into account, but the bottom line is this ladies - engaged insinuates that a wedding is being planned, and even the biggest of weddings can be planned in a year's time.

If you are in a relationship and simply want something to celebrate the seriousness of that relationship might I suggest a commitment or friendship ring. 

And for those who are upset with me because of this blog - really what do I know, I'm a dressmaker.

Catering Tip #3 of 4: I prefer the buffet or family dining myself.

Most brides prefer a sit down dinner where each person is served a set menu because they are afraid that otherwise they may be considered cheap, but there are four reasons that I think other styles of dining should be great considered:

Firstly, the served plate option is sort of limitting.  The guest are given a plate of food usually whose menu has been choosen without their input.  This puts picky eaters on the spot, and can be embarrassing and uncomfortable if they don't like what's being served.  (I keep talking about picky eaters because I am one. lol.  I have tried to get over it, and I'm much better about it now that I'm a little older.)  Conversely, with a buffet or family style dining you can offer your guest a larger variety of dishes including carving stations and additional sides. 

Secondly, fine dinning lends itself to waste.  Often times, with surf and turf you will see whole lobster tails left on a plate to be later thrown in the garbage; where as, with other forms of serving like a buffet or family style dinning this food can be packaged and taken home, or to a neighborhood shelter.  For those of you are into giving this is a great way to share the abundance of your wedding day with those who are less fortunate.

Thirdly, sit down dinners for me have always been a little boring.  I almost dread them.  The idea of being served a soup, a salad, and a maincurse without really knowing  what's coming next causes me to be anxious.  I know it sounds wierd, but I'm not along. There are many people who avoid sit down dinners because itf you can't find conversation, then the moment can be very awkward.   But do not fret there is a solution, both family style dinning and buffet dinners are much more engaging.  They can turned the eating experience into an activity where each person is an active participants as they began to make choices and pick and choice what they are eating.  "Try the coconut milk sauce over the rice?"  Or" how is the shrimp I think I might try that next".  This interaction helps to ease the anxiety that some people natural encounter when they are in large group.


The last reason is the most obvious one, let's face you can save lots of money by choosing a buffet or family style dinner over a plate per person dinner;  and, spending more for less is a just not a good way to start off your lives together now is it, lol. 

Having said all that, I reminisce.  The best food I have had while at a wedding was at my good friend Keisha Hudson's wedding reception seven years ago in Columbus Ohio.  It was a buffet.  I choose the chicken breast and wild rice.  There was a white wine cream sauce which I used over the rice that made that meal one I will never forget.  By the way  Ms. Hudson you were gorgeous also. 

And, if you are looking for someplace that specializes in family style dinning try Cedar's Mediterranean Restaurant in Hyde Park.  It's delicious.
