Meet Maggie Fasan a 4th Generation Florist

Her father's father, no grand mother's father, wait a minute I should have taken notes - let me just say, Maggie is the fourth generation in her family to manage the Fasan Florist which has been in business since 1924!  And when asked if she was forced into the business she admitted that perhaps it was that way for her father, but said, "No, I find a value in working with the flowers.  I really enjoy it." So after going to college in Wisconsin, Maggie returned to help her father run the business that he had dedicated his life to.

Now you look at the building, and the inside decor, and you think well it seems like nothing has changed here since 1924, lol - the look of the floral boutique is almost antiquated including the florescent sign that modestly reads "One of the Best Florist in Chicago".  So when Maggie, who looks very young,  brought out their huge portfolio albums I was blown away by how fresh and forward their floral designs were.  Fasan Florist has more than a reputation, they have volumes of proof in pictures that they are indeed "One of the Best Florist in Chicago".  When you began to look through their recent work, it illustrates what happens when generations of experience meet with floral trends.  You can clearly see that the dynamic duo of Maggie with the eagerness of her youth, coupled with the mastery that experience has afforded her father, Mr. Fasan, is a team that can bring life to the floral fantasy of any bride.  Maggie showed me her new work with combining leaves of grass and weaving them into floral arrangements with bold colored wild flowers.  Surprisingly,  these bouquets were unique enough to satisfy the brides who always say, "I want something different"; yet, they were finished to such perfection that they could be appreciated by anyone who admires beauty.

Then Maggie turned the page to a wedding they had done at the Drake -  it was a look classic enough for royalty; in fact, if you are looking for a vintage look in flowers you have to get Maggie to show you these photographs.  It may have been crass, but I had to ask her the cost just because the centerpieces sat up about three feet high and were full with the most beautiful large roses.  I was pleasantly surprised that the price was affordable.

Although Maggie gave me a lot of reasons why she went into working with her father, I could see in the way her eyes completely lite up when she spoke of him that her love of flowers was an extension of her love for her dad.  And I would recommend that you all visit Fasan Florist, a small town American florist in the heart of the city because they will put their heart and soul into your floral arrangement.  Oh, and I almost forgot, if you want to meet Maggie Fasan and see examples of her and her father's work, they will be at  the Zhou B Art Center on Dec 8th for The Birth of Atha:  An American Ballet and Opera.

Jeff and the Traveling Photo Booth

Everyone on the local Bridal scene knows and loves Jeff.  If could be that he is extremely charismatic, or it could be that he always rolls with a big toy that we all like to play around with - the "Traveling Photo Booth".

What's a traveling photo Booth?  It's one of the hottest new bridal trends.  Remeber when you and your friends would go downtown to Nay Pier or Woolworth and take pictures in the booth behind the curtain.  Well, a couple of years back a couple of years ago a team of guys  got the wacky idea to lease these booths out for use at wedding receptions and events; thus a million dollar (maybe that's why he's always so happy) idea was born.

Let me explain.  Firstly, this is very different from what your photographer whose pictures you kind of want to be scripted so that everyone is captured in their best light and the entire wedding is documented.  The "traveling photo booth" is almost the opposite, these photographs will let your guest be a diva, a gansta, a mc, a funny man, wild, and or crazy in love.  You never know what people will do in front of the camera once they are behind the closed curtain.

Secondly, Your guest will be excited to walk away from your wedding with their photo strips.  Trust me that excitement doesn't wear off with age.  When I was in the photo booth I was still the teenage boy at Woolworth and that nastalgic boyish  excitement you can't put a pice tag on .  The more meaningful gifts you give to your guest the more you immortalize your wedding day.

And thirdly, it's a great activity to get your guest out of the seriosness of the moment, and get them having fun  I've seen Jeff at many of the bridal events, and while other vendors are looking around trying to get potential brides to come buy their booth, Jeff is always swamped with beautiful, and not neccessarily as beautiful, women and men alike posing and having a good time.

So when Jeff and I did our last event at the University Club after a few glasses of champagne and almost a tray of their jumbo cocumut crust shrimp I was feeling pretty gutsy.  I walked over to him with the swaem of models, and soon to be brides hoarding the booth, and I twisted his arm until he agreed.  The result - YAY!

Jeff has agree to come to the Birth of Atha:  An American Ballet and Opera at the Zhou B Artt Center on December 8, and bring his "Traveling Photobooth".  So you can come with your future hubbys, and/or  BBF's so we can all "act a fool" behind the curtian, lol

Thank you Jeff for accepting our invitation to Platinum we are confident that our brides will love working with you.

BRIDAL COLORS FOR FALL/SPRING?

Ladies let's start with the GROOMS.  It's not every year that the men even make a mark on Bridal Fashion, so this year it's nice that they are really stepping out of the box.  And, no it doesn't mean that you give him free reign, but it's nice to see that YOUR BIG DAY is also HIS BIG DAY.   So, if hubby to be comes to you and voices his desire that the groomsmen wear Grey, Brown, Blue, on even pinstripes - LISTEN because he is on to one of the next hot trends in bridal color.

To further complicate your bridal palette, I've noticed that Bridesmaids are looking at bolder colors like Burgundy, Canary Yellow, Olive, and Royal Purple. Unlike pastels, bolder colors can be a lot more challenging to coordinate, and to add to that the groomsmen don't want to wear black tuxedos and you've got yourself a catastrophe if you're color challenged.

So to help you navigate in the world of color for the Fall and early Spring season here are three of our tops choices:

COLOR COMBINATION 1:  Champagne, Gold, Peach, and Brown.

MEN:  Brown suits with brown bow ties over peach shirts (if they try to go pink just say NO! It's just too over done and we don't want to startle the older men, lol). Pull it all together with apricot floral corsages.
WOMEN: The women should wear peach or brown dresses with contrasting sashes. The women can accent their dresses with gold heels and jewelry.  A classic gold sequins clutches purse would also be nice.

COLOR COMBINATION 2: Lavender, Plum, and Platinum

MEN:  Platinum or charcoal grey suits with lilac shirts.  Plum corsages, bow ties, and handkerchiefs will bring this color palette together for a strong finish.
WOMEN: The bridesmaids can wear lavender with plum accents or vice versa.  Silver jewelry and shoes work well with this color combination.

COLOR COMBINATION 3: Navy Blue, a faint Mint Green, and a Pastel Yellow

MEN:   Navy blue suits with mint green shirts.  A nice yellow carnation corsage would pop with this color combination.
WOMEN:  Navy blue or mint green dresses with yellow sashes, shoes, and accessories.

So please let your imagination guide you.  The above  suggestions will offer you lots of exciting floral and decor opportunities.  I can definitely see a peach invitation with a brown inlay and metallic gold writing; or silver candle holders with layers of lavender orchids and plum fabric, or a lakeside with centerpieces of hydrangea and carnation combinations pulling on the pastel yellow and green theme,  with table setting using rich navy blue accents for an executive finish.

3 Surprising Trends for Fall Brides.

It's official, brides just can't get enough of THE SASH.  While this trend has been gaining in popularity for almost two years, it's allure is now picking up in more conservative boutiques through out the Midwest.  In fact, Susan from the Left Bank here in Chicago told me that it's hard for her to even keep them in the store they are moving so quickly.  We, at Atha Sharod Bridal kind of seen this one coming though, so you'll see that many of our gowns are coupled with sashes.

More surprising, is the trend towards the MERMAID CUT.  We have been forced to add a mermaid cut to the White Collection - LUXE.  The ballroom cut continues it's popularity, but as thicker brides turn their back on this cut, and opt for the MERMAID and TRUMPET upscale boutique that followed Vera Wang's lead too closely are scrambling for more fitted dresses for their brides who want to show their curves.

And the last trend I'd like to highlight involves a  move away from the ever so popular sweat heart.  I was afraid that because of Kate's dress brides might start requesting long fitted sleeves, and I am glad that as a trend that hasn't seemed to have caught on.  We have noticed that there has been a resurgence of the CAPPED SLEEVE, and as a design consequence  the KEYHOLE back.  We are  proud to have been in front of this trend as one of the more popular pieces in our White Collection - LUXE collection features capped sleeves.

So there you have it my observations of surprising trends for the fall brides: Sashes, Mermaids, and Capped sleeves.

Art of Imagination: Deborah lives up to her ambitious company name!

So I'm planning a runway show in September or October, and a friend tells me to check out the Zhou B. Art Center as a possible host..  When I visit the venue Donna, who is very pleasant by the way, shows me into her office where I see the most exquisite table place setting with a centerpience made of silver painted twigs with streams of chandelier crystals hanging from them and shear fabric surrounding the entire area.  The display was so powerful that I knew I had to contact one of the designers who worked on the concept.  So it is with much excitement that I announce that Deborah for the Art of Imagination will provide the decor for the Loft on Lake on Augsust 7th for our"sneak preview" of The White Collection - LUXE.

For those of you who do not know, on August 7th at the Loft on Lake you will witness a true master of theater and Drama as she transforms the Loft into a Wonderland.  Her use of fabric and color are unparallelled and her reputation is blemish-free.  Thank you Deborah for making the Loft look it's best for me on that day.  And ladies if you are thinking that you might need someone who specialize in decor to tie in your story, and color scheme, come check out Deborah on Sunday, August 7th at the Loft on Lake.

Styled by Fancy Candies & Sweet Buffets "Indulgent"

Elizabeth Ann O'Brien from Fancy Candies & Sweet Buffets is that little girl inside of every woman who dreams of marrying the prince someday.  She is the hopeless romantic that cries at all the Julia Roberts movies.  She is the little train that could, and she encourages everyone around her to "think big".  So when I tell my fairytale on August 7th at the Loft on Lake she will be there weaving my theme into her breath-taking styling of my dessert buffets.

Like all story tellers she is artistic, creative, and a character.  She is every bodies Irish aunt - she's about as easy going and chipper as they come.  And while the dessert sthat she styles are sophisticated, romantic, and dreamy, more than anything they are indulgent.  Your guest will feel completely catered too, and spoiled by the thought and details that she puts into her craft.

I have to share with you a funny story about what happened when I first met her at the Chicago Bridal Expo event at the Sharaton back in June.  I'll start with a simple admission: I am diabetic; consequently I crave sweets.  So  I'm walking through the bridal expo meeting some of the other vendors and bam!  Three tables with all kinds of goodies some of which I haven't seen since I was seven years old.    It was so attractive that I was drawn over to the table like a kid in a candy factory, I mean I was happy.  I actually got a little giddy looking at her display,  and when I reached for a cupcake Elizabeth goes, "oh no that's my display you can't eat the goodies until thirty minutes before the end of the show.  I style dessert trays".  Needless to say I was so done with her in that moment, "What kind of cruel joke was that!"  I later figured out that the attractiveness of the dessert buffet, the magnetism that her presentation created was what she was selling to the brides.

What ever your story is let Elizabeth help you tell your story through a customized styled dessert presentation.  I know I can't wait until I see what she does for mine, but knowing her it will be a fairytale; more importantly, because this is Atha Sharod Bridal's BIG DAY, and you are our guest you can eat as many goodies as you want.  Thank you Fancy.

Tracy Ballog; She knows how to paint a face.

Okay I hate to break the news, but just because you like doing make-up, and you're pretty good at it that doesn' make you a make-up artist, lol.  No, but I'm serious though. Honestly, doesn't it seem like there are almost as many make-up artists as there are models.  And now that photographers are retouching photos they are so fed up with the bad makeup jobs that they are telling us, the designers, not to even bother with makeup.  I still remember Palo Dubrik telling me, "You can add make-up in editing."   So, why did I choose Tracy Ballog for my big show on August 7th?  Because I couldn't afford not too.

I'm spending too many resources and time presenting the "sneak preview" of The White Collection - LUXE to take a chance that the make-up will not be stellar.  Yes, you could edit the photos after the fact, but its a pretty expensive choice. I want my models to be confident that they look great, and I believe that confidence will translate into better images. You know when you're spending a fortune on one day, a small detail like makeup is important because it does effect how you and your bridal party will look in your photographs.

I remembered that one of my clients looked impeccable on her wedding day, and I gave her a call.  She recommended Tracy without reservation, so I took a look at her portfolio on her facebook page -  FLAWLESS.  Rows and rows of pictures of her work that are all natural and clean, but blemish free.    Turns out she has been doing make-up since forever, no offense Tracey you are still a young whipper snapper; in addition, she has a great sense of humor ladies.

Tracy  I can't wait to work with you on August 7th at the Loft on Lake.  Ladies if you need a makeup artist come check Tracy Ballog out.  I know your cousin who works for Avon does a good job, but on your BIG DAY you might want to go with experience.

LOVE ROBERT

By the way I know many of you have heard about the new technique where it's almost like they air brush the make-up onto your face. Its the latest rave and Tracy will illustrate the technique, and give you the pros and cons of using this technique on your wedding day when you come on August 7th.  Thank you Tracy.

Cedars Mediterranean Kitchen: Experience the Universality and Versatility of Old World Cuisine

For all those who have grown up in Hype Park, or attended the University of Chicago what I’m about to say will be old news; because, during dinner time for almost twenty years Cedars restaurant has enjoyed great popularity in this community, and it continues to be a favorite caterer for the university at many of their larger events.  But, for all of you who are thinking, “Mediterranean at my wedding?” I introduce to you the unique options of Cedars, an excellent way to serve your guest with a meal that is healthy, delicious, and satisfying.

What is Mediterranean food?  Well there are many cultures that live along the Mediterranean Sea.  But usually the term is used to refer to Palestinian, Lebanese, and Greek cuisines.  The main course in Mediterranean food is usually mildly seasoned grilled lamb, beef, chicken, shrimp, or salmon served alongside mixed summer vegetables including ripe tomatoes and squashes sautéed in olive oil with a hint of garlic. The staple of this diet is rice and Couscous.  Nutritionist are turning to this cuisine for it’s ability to offer a healthy, yet tasty meal alternative.  Because it doesn’t use strong spices, excessive salt, or heavy oils, it’s not only appealing to a larger cross-section of the American population but it’s also considered healthy food.   Mediterranean food is an old world wholesome way of eating that is arguable the basis for most of Europe’s cuisines.  Yes, the food definitely takes you someplace else when you eat it, but it’s a familiar palatable experience.  And, no one knows how to make your taste buds feel more at home than Cedar’s.

Shish-Kebobs are a popular cornerstone of Mediterranean cuisine; and, at Cedars boy do they know how to do Kebobs.  Cedars has a wide variety of kebobs including beef tenderloin, chicken, salmon, shrimp, and kefta (a lamb and beef mixture).  Cedars starts by combining green peppers, red peppers, and tomatoes on a skewers with their marinated meats.  Then Cedars’s special touch is that they grill them at a very high temperature in their famous brick oven.  The result is the best kebobs in Chicago.   I usually order the kefta kebobs where Cedars combines minced lamb and beef by grinding them together with herbs and spices.  Kefta kebobs are similar to the concept behind gyros (a Greek specialty) only Cedars’s kefta kebobs are a lot less salty and much tastier.  The most popular of the kebobs are the chicken kebobs.  The chicken is marinated in a variety of herbs including a hint of yellow curry and fresh lemon.  Ceders’s kebobs would make a delicious addition at any gathering whether it’s an outdoor catered  barbecue or a sit down affair where you want something a little more exciting than poorly seasoned chicken breast and steak.

Of course they can cater a formal dining event, or a buffet, but Cedars’s specializes in family style dinning.  Cedars’s family style dining is a sure way to serve your guests plenty of good tasty food, and offer them a wide variety of dishes.  For example you can have a family plate of Shrimp Kebobs, Chicken Kebobs, and lamb or beef at each table allowing your guest to enjoy three meat choices.  Alongside the meats, Cedars is sure to provide a heaping family sized plate of sautéed vegetable and some rice at each table to accompany the meats and satisfy your vegetarian guest.  Whatever you choose with Cedars’s family dining your guest will be presented with a feast beyond their imagination.

And on August 7th you will enjoy one of my favorites in the Loft on Lake when Atha Sharod Bridal host a "sneak preview" of our forth -coming collection, The White Collection - LUXE.  Can't wait to see you all there.  To RSVP to this event call (773) 285-1178

Reuter’s Bakery: Since 1927 and still at the Top of Their Game.

Anytime we celebrate it’s tradition that we have cake.  The vision of the bride as she cuts into the cake of life is one of the most memorable parts of a wedding reception, the snap shot of the mother-to-be with her swollen belly staring down at a carriage shaped creation smothered in whip cream is a keep sake for any baby shower, and let’s not forget the champagne toast when the entire family comes over to see their little princess go off to prom, and the matriarchs of the family force her to take one bite of cake just before she walks out the door.  Cake is a tribute to tradition and transition in American culture.  We bond around cake.  We love cake.  And when it comes to cake, no one does it better than my friend Richard owner of Reuters Bakery.  Richard’s creations are stepped in tradition, amazingly artistic, and oh so yummy.
Rueters has been around since 1927, but I still like to refer to it as a hidden treasure in Chicago.  In fact, when I visit Reuters I often find myself looking at the other customers as if we are a part of an elite club, but those who know cake are familiar with Rueters.  Richard’s father Richard Sr. was a master baker and in the late sixties he combined the innovations of his generation with the recipes he inherited from Leo Reuter, arguably the most noted Chicago baker of his time.   Once the home of many German, Irish, and Italian immigrants the neighborhood surrounding Reuters’s has seen many changes as its friends have moved far away, but inside the doors of Rueters it’s a true melting pot as these same old school customers, their children, and their grandchildren come back home for the traditions of Reuters.   Richards takes his responsibility serious and preserves the baking secrets that have been passed onto him. Although Richard’s capacity in the kitchen is fortified by family recipes that go back to the 1920’s, today his willingness to try new things makes him an artist in his own right.
Richard’s majesty in cake decorating is amazing.  Whether it’s the art of contemporary icing techniques, or the latest trends in architectural shapes he can capture your artistic vision in a cake.  He does cakes for all occasions including baby showers, quencenearas, bridal showers, birthdays, anniversaries, and of course weddings. Richard is as much an artist as he is a baker.  His attitude towards his craft is refreshingly positive and open minded proving not only that his father passed down to him the recipes but also that he inherited a passion for baking.  Richard likes a challenge, and he is a true people person.  His positive attitude and eagerness to please his customers is reflected in his work.  His artistry is amazingly detailed, precise, and creative; but, the way his cakes looks isn’t why I recommend using him for your baking needs - it’s the taste.  Just take one piece, and he will take you through a palette of unique flavor combinations that will excite your taste buds.
Everyone has their own favorites, because he offers such a wide variety of cake flavors - mine is the chocolate and raspberry.  The icing is a pure European semi-dark chocolate that Richard layers over the entire cake like a thin crackling shell.  Then on the inside are thin layers of a German chocolate cake that are as light and fluffy as the chocolate is rich.  The crisp icing and the moist cake juxtapose each other creating a delicate combination of textures and flavors marrying in your mouth.  Then he gels the layers together with a tangy citrusy raspberry spread which lingers in your mouth after the chocolate has gone away, and tempts you to take in another mouthful.   Just thinking about it is a sin.
So, on August 7th be at the Loft on Lake for the sneak preview of Atha Sharod Bridal's forth coming collection, The White Collection  - LUXE,  Richard is coming with all his famous desserts for us to enjoy on my BIG DAY.  To RSVP to this event please call (773) 285-1178.

Norman's Bistro

So if Norman is the head of the Bistro than Chef Robert is the heart, and the two work really well together.

Norman himself is a staunch business man and real estate tycoon of exquisite taste.  Everything he does is methodical, organized, and well thought-out;  in fact, his Kenwood   neighbors who have watched his empire grow describe him as being "shrewd".  When you visit the Bistro you will know him by this upright posture and pristine attire.  While you are eating you will notice the ambiance of the restaurant which has Norman's name written all over it.  Maple wood floors throughout the 3,000 square foot bistro provide for seating arrangements spacious enough for private conversations.  Art from all corners of the world grace the walls.  The music playing is an eclectic mixture of yesterdays jams and today's soul, while at a volume that is romantic.  Everything is in it's place, and the overall image fulfills your expectations of an upscale bistro..

The food  is far less linear, no matter what kind of food you like there is a pleasant surprise awaiting on the menu.  With appetizers like the Asian wings sprinkled with chopped bacon, and the ocean cakes that combine shrimp, lobster, and scallops with a wasabi sauce you will know that the main course won't let you down;  and, it doesn't.  Everything from the Chicken pot pie loaded with crisp fresh vegetables to the Gumbo with a large medallion shrimp in every forkful is pleasantly filling and delicious.  While, I am a meat eater, I even enjoy his vegetarian dish featuring a sweat potato smothered with cinnamon, spices and a hint of brown sugar.  The meats have been marinated and are flavorful, the vegetables are crisp and not over cooked, and the seasonings are mild , but playful;  so,  simply put - the man can cook.

And this is why I am delighted to announce that you will be able to enjoy a bridal tasting of Norman's Bistro in the Loft of Lake on August 7th when we gather for the sneak preview of Atha Sharod Bridal's forth coming collection of bridal gowns and negligees, "The White Collection - LUXE".  So, get your palettes ready because I'm sure it will be tasty.  Thank you Norman for showing up for my BIG DAY.  To RSVP for this event please call (773) 285-1178.

The Genius of Rosemary Fanti

You don't have a "shi - shi"  bridal fashion event in Chicago without "the blonde lady that does the sketches".  So, yes I was relieved once Rosemary Fanti agreed to come and illustrate my collection.

Rosemary's light shines very bright.  She is a talent of spell bounding proportions.  Over the years, we in the local fashion community  have been fortune to be able to marvel over her creations  at our many ritzy fashion events.  My heart quickens at the thought that she will be there to illustrate my BIG DAY on August 7th at the Loft on Lake.

I know that you will love seeing Rosemary as she illustrates the evening for us, and I believe that she is that unique idea or concept that you were looking for to spice up your wedding reception.  I for one can not wait to get my hands on those sketches Rosemary, I know your perspective will be so engaging.  And, brides I suspect your guest will be equally as excited to have her illustrate them while they have a ball on your BIG DAY.

She is a one of the wonders of Chicago, and I am humbled that she has given Atha Sharod Bridal her stamp of approval.  From artist to artist, " I really admire your work.." We know that you will also enjoy her amazing talent on August 7th when you come out for our "sneak preview" of our forth coming collection, The White Collection - LUXE at the Loft on LakeTo RSVP for this event please call (773) 285-1178.

Tuan H. Bui, with a bird's eye.

While Tuan H. Bui is a man of little spoken words, he is very articulate in the language of film.  His understanding of light, space, and perspective expands the boundaries of his art.  In the age of digital imaging it's refreshing to see a bridal photographer who is still a master of the medium of film.  Tuan avoids the pitfalls of photographers who rely so heavily on adding effects that they cease to capture the realness that is loaded in the special moments of life.

His photographs tell you everything you need to know about him.  He is careful, attentive, and methodical by nature, so he is excellent at composing a photograph.  He is warm, quirky, and unassuming, so your guest will find him adorable as opposed to irritating, and they will give him the shots he needs.  He is a people lover, so he watches people with a birds eye, and you will find that when a moment occurs he is already there as if he somehow seen it coming;  perhaps, the gift his true gift is the gift of observation.

And we could go on and on about why we are delighted to have Tuan photograph our forth coming collection, the White Collection - LUXE, on August 7th at the Loft on Lake, but Atha Sharod Bridal invites you to come for the "sneak preview" where you can see his style up close.  To RSVP to this event please call (773) 285-1178.

Why The Loft on Lake?

Why the "Loft on Lake"?

In my travels I have been to some beautiful places:  the  Louvre, of Paris, the pier off the Bani river in Mopti, the Palm of Dubai.  Yet, the 65ft skylight at the Loft on Lake still catches me completely off guard.  So, when I decided to give a "sneak preview" of my collection I crossed my fingers, and said, "Cher, I just need any day that's open in August".

The space is an open canvas that juxtaposes the elements of nature - red clay bricks, oak wood timber, and the moonlit skies with urbanite living amenities - a state of the art sound and visual system, a gracious chef's kitchen equipped with stainless steel appliances and granite topped island serving stations, gorgeous contemporary lounge furniture, and a well appointed art gallery.  The space itself is a conversation piece.

A far cry from a run of the mill hotel ball room;  the Loft on Lake is something fresh and new..  The Loft on Lake is where special people go for their events.  The Loft on Lake is where we are holding the "sneak preview" of The White Collection - LUXE on August 7th.  I can't wait to meet you all there.

Thank you Cher for being so accommodating.

Meet Susan from the Left Bank in Loft on Lake on August 7th

About a year ago when I was looking for a veil with a scalloped aloncon lace finish for a Lake Geneva wedding, I began calling around town and all roads led me back to Susan at the Left Bank.  Susan is so accomplished as a bridal mainstay in Chicago.  She has been in business for over 15 years, and she is definitely at the top of her game.  Because she is the coveted stylist of many high-end brides you would think she would be stoic and stand off-ish; contrarily, ladies she is remarkably welcoming, and eager to help her colleagues and customers.

I was hesitant to call Susan, and try to book her for our "sneak preview" on August 7th at the Loft on Lake, because I know how busy she is at this time of year.  Thankfully when I approached her about our event she was as always a burst of summer breeze.  Her positive energy, and vitality is so refreshing.  If ever you get nervous, frustrated, eager, or lost on your bridal journey go to Susan at the Left Bank.  Her boutique will take you back to the time when you were playing house as a little girl, and you had no worries in the world.

Her store is located at 1155 W Webster Ave. in Lincoln Park on the North side of Chicago.  She started out as a jewelry boutique, but she's expanded to hair pendants, veils, shoes, purses, other accessories, and bridal gifts.  I particularly think her ranges in prices makes the Left Bank one of the few bridal boutiques that has something for every bride on that special day.  Susan certainly has an eye for the dramatic, as she has shoes covered in gems, veils with feathers, and custom necklaces with pearls the size of walnuts; but, what I love are the simple classic treasures and even your conservative sophisticated brides just can't do without.  I can't imagine a soon-to-bride walking into the store, and not falling in love.  So, my advice is if you are on a budget, leave your credit cards in the car, lol.

And Susan thank you so much for coming to style my models on August 7th at the Loft on Lake.  It's an absolute honor to be in your company.  I can't wait to see what you do, and I know the brides who will be in attendance are excited too.  And if you need some ideas on how to bring a little pizazz on your BIG DAY don't miss Susan at the :"sneak preview" of our forth coming collection, The White Collection - LUXE.  To RSVP for this event please call (773) 285-1178.

So how long is too long to stay engaged?

The short answer is over 18 months.

Now of course the long answer has to take a gazillion things into account, but the bottom line is this ladies - engaged insinuates that a wedding is being planned, and even the biggest of weddings can be planned in a year's time.

If you are in a relationship and simply want something to celebrate the seriousness of that relationship might I suggest a commitment or friendship ring.

And for those who are upset with me because of this blog - really what do I know, I'm a dressmaker.

Catering Tip #3 of 4: I prefer the buffet or family dining myself.

Most brides prefer a sit down dinner where each person is served a set menu because they are afraid that otherwise they may be considered cheap, but there are four reasons that I think other styles of dining should be great considered:

Firstly, the served plate option is sort of limitting.  The guest are given a plate of food usually whose menu has been choosen without their input.  This puts picky eaters on the spot, and can be embarrassing and uncomfortable if they don't like what's being served.  (I keep talking about picky eaters because I am one. lol.  I have tried to get over it, and I'm much better about it now that I'm a little older.)  Conversely, with a buffet or family style dining you can offer your guest a larger variety of dishes including carving stations and additional sides.

Secondly, fine dinning lends itself to waste.  Often times, with surf and turf you will see whole lobster tails left on a plate to be later thrown in the garbage; where as, with other forms of serving like a buffet or family style dinning this food can be packaged and taken home, or to a neighborhood shelter.  For those of you are into giving this is a great way to share the abundance of your wedding day with those who are less fortunate.

Thirdly, sit down dinners for me have always been a little boring.  I almost dread them.  The idea of being served a soup, a salad, and a maincurse without really knowing  what's coming next causes me to be anxious.  I know it sounds wierd, but I'm not along. There are many people who avoid sit down dinners because itf you can't find conversation, then the moment can be very awkward.   But do not fret there is a solution, both family style dinning and buffet dinners are much more engaging.  They can turned the eating experience into an activity where each person is an active participants as they began to make choices and pick and choice what they are eating.  "Try the coconut milk sauce over the rice?"  Or" how is the shrimp I think I might try that next".  This interaction helps to ease the anxiety that some people natural encounter when they are in large group.

The last reason is the most obvious one, let's face you can save lots of money by choosing a buffet or family style dinner over a plate per person dinner;  and, spending more for less is a just not a good way to start off your lives together now is it, lol.

Having said all that, I reminisce.  The best food I have had while at a wedding was at my good friend Keisha Hudson's wedding reception seven years ago in Columbus Ohio.  It was a buffet.  I choose the chicken breast and wild rice.  There was a white wine cream sauce which I used over the rice that made that meal one I will never forget.  By the way  Ms. Hudson you were gorgeous also.

And, if you are looking for someplace that specializes in family style dinning try Cedar's Mediterranean Restaurant in Hyde Park.  It's delicious.

Catering Tip #2 of 4: The 3 Things To Consider When Choosing Your Caterer and Menu.

  1. Never use a caterer whose work you have not seen (and a tasting does not count)

Try using restaurants whose food you know when choosing a caterer.  Restaurants have consistent recipes, and quality.  The chef at the restaurant proves his ability to prepare for a large group of people every evening, and you can pop up at the restaurant and see what he has to offer.  In addition, restaurants usually feel honored to have their food served at your event; therefore, they put a lot of effort into making sure that your event will be the proper introduction of their food to a group of prospective new patrons.

Conversely, lots of event caterers use head chefs that do not work in house.  The result can be poor quality control and inconsistent service.  Some event caterers wrongly view their customers in isolation because they know that their reputations are protected by the fact that the majority of the guest won’t be in the market for an event caterer, or won’t even know who catered the event.

  2. Never serve small proportions

Women, I know that some of you eat like birds, and that many of you have been dieting for months to fit into your dresses;   but, on that night – do not serve small proportions.  I don’t care how beautiful, or how fancy, or how award winning the chef says he is, if you don’t satisfy your guest they will leave as quickly as possible so that they can go get something more to eat.  Hunger is a demanding bodily function that can not be ignored.

If you ensure that people eat a lot of food then they will drink, they will laugh, and they will help you create those embarrassing stories on the dance floor that will make your event memorable.

  1. Never choose your favorite dish as the dish you serve at your wedding

While I love Indian food, I know that at a large multicultural gathering some people might find the spices too strong.  Likewise, I could eat Mexican everyday, but I recognize that depending upon the gathering the cheeses, strong spices, and heavy oils might prove overwhelming to certain guest.  Think about your guest first.  Think about who they are, and who they are not.

Are there Muslims or Jews in the group?  Are there vegetarians?  Are they risk takers when it comes to food?  Yes, it’s easy to say it’s not about them, but in reality it really is.  Every one of them is here to honor you because you invited them, and they deserve to enjoy a good meal.

Please take this advice as wisdom.  Over the years I have attended many events, and seen many catering faux pas.  I know that these rules seem very simple, but if you follow these three simple rules you will find that you can avoid many of the pitfalls that others before you have fallen into.  In the future I will expand upon the importance of following these three golden rules regarding event catering.

Save big on planning your BIG DAY. Tip #1 of 5

Consider a park wedding.  Chicago has some beautiful parks.  "The point" in Hyde Park on Chicago's South Shore Drive is one of my favorite, Evanston is also gorgeous.  Picture a candle lite tent.  Park weddings are always so beautiful and romantic.  Your guest will appreciate being outdoors in the summer time.  You can couple this with a barbecue theme.  A great restaurant that could cater your outdoor reception would be Cedar's Mediterranean also located in Hyde Park.  Right there you can save thousands of dollars;  but, standing at "The Point" with your new Husband and watching the fuscia, orange, and yellow hues of the sun as it sets over Lake Michigan is priceless.

An Uplifting Message for Thicker Women

While I know it's normal for women to diet before their Big Day, I offer uplifting message to all thicker "brides to be", and I would like to dispel two myths so that they may be free when choosing their bridal gown.

There are two myths I would like to dispel:

Myth #1      Thicker women can not wear Cinderella (ball) gowns because they make them look larger.  This is absolutely untrue.  Ball gowns can be very flattering on larger women primarily because women who are larger up top can really fill the gown out and give the gown more presence.  If the cut of the gown is slightly highwaisted this can be a wonderful way to create a slimming effect.  Often times pear shaped women can have very flattering shoulders, back, and cleavage.  These can be assets to show case with a strapless or sweat heart ball gown.

Myth  # 2    Thicker women cannot wear mermaid looks.  This again may be misguiding  The mermaid dress is designed to emphasize curves.  The curvier you are the better this dress actually looks.  With a nice strong undergarment often plus size women can really create an hour glass image using the mermaid cut.  I would say that the mermaid cut and the trumpet cuts are excellent choices for plus size women especially if your waist is smaller than your hip line and your breast line.   The mermaid and the trumpet cut will work to show your curves instead of making you look rounder.

And also "brides to be" remember that on this day, you must love yourself.  At the end of the aisle is a man who has chosen to spend the rest of his life with you.  In the audience are your invited guest who love you for who you are.  And amongst them are many men and women who can appreciate your outstanding beauty so don't be too hard on yourself.  I hope I didn't offend anyone with the use of the term thicker.  It's a term of endearment and I prefer it to plus size.  Now this doesn't mean hop off your diets; but, be you.  Be all of you.

Catering Tip #1 of 4: Dessert

After you cut the bridal cake, go ahead and take the photo ops, then instead of serving the cake try packaging the slices in individual containers (similar to the take home containers used for pastries at Starbucks) for your guest to take home. You can also have these containers decorated with ribbons printed with you and your hubby's names.  Once your guest have eaten a big meal often the wedding cake seems like just a gesture and goes to waste;  on the contrary, after a long night of dancing your guest will appreciate it more while at home with a tall glass of milk.  So, pass these containers out as your guest leave, and your cake goes from boring into a pleasant surprise.

Besides, everyone loves dessert trays.  A great way to get your guest back on their feet is to have dessert trays with individually sized pastries, and candies placed strategically throughout the reception.  Guest will walk over to the tables, and are therefore more apt to 'shake a tail feather' while they are munching a bite sized cupcake.

While we are on the subject of desserts, I'd like to plug my friend Richard at Rueters Bakery in Chicago.   They have the most wonderful personal sized shortcakes.  They make them daily with fresh strawberries and homemade whipped cream.  He is also a five star artist when it comes to wedding cakes. In fact, Richard and his family have been making desserts for over eighty years.  Just go try one, and you'll see why they have been around so long!

For the Green Bridal Gown Go Local

While I'm no Al Gore, I too have really begun to think about how I interact with the environment.  When planning the ultimate celebration - your wedding day - there is no better time to send a clear message that you are going to live the rest of your life in harmony with mother earth.  Recently we've heard a lot about "green" fabrics. We at Atha are considering adding two "green" destination pieces to our forth coming bridal collection, so that we can cater to those brides who want to buy green;  nevertheless, there are some points that are important to add to the discussion of the "green" wedding gown.

For starters, there isn't a governing body that regulates who can use the word "green" to describe fabrics.  So, of course you have business men/women who could care less about the environment claiming that fabrics are green that actually put more stress on the environment than our more traditional fabrics.  As, fabric expert Richard Scneider of Supreme Novelty Fabric Company pointed out in our discussion last month "often times fabrics that may be deemed "greener" may use more dyes which add to their stress on the environment in other ways."  So, one must look at the overall picture in order to gauge the true impact on the environment of the fabrics' production.

Not to mention, silk has always been an extremely durable fabric; and, its ability to stand the test of time lends itself to being re worn.  Also,  the popularity of silk amongst brides over the years means that the chances of another bride - even your daughter - in the future wanting to wear your gown is higher.  Consider that wearing a vintage, or once wed gown is perhaps the most practical way to avoid waste when choosing a gown.  This point is not lost by our friends at White Chicago who have a wonderful collection of once wed and sample designer  gowns.  And here at Atha we can help you rework those gowns, and make them new by adding your own unique flare.

But all things considered, one of the oldest ways of shopping for your bridal gown turns out to also be one of the most environmentally friendly - getting your gown designed by a local designer.   The environmental standards that we adhere to here exceed those of China which is where over 90% of the gowns purchased at boutiques are imported from.  You can also avoid all the waste caused by shipping from overseas that has been an unfortunate byproduct of globalization.  At most of the stores where our label is sold we are proud to say that we are usually the only brand that is manufactured in the United States.  And, for those brides who can make it to Chicago, you can enjoy a custom made gown made right here in a way that is entirely eco-friendly - by hand.
